World Cup Squad

Here we are then. 15 of England's finest ready to pick up where they left off (hopefully).

So, Virgil is back at the helm but Mal Loye has gone. Once again the selectors have picked 3 unfit players (Vaughan, Lewis & Anderson). That old gambling streak is still present. Right, here's who we're taking:

Michael Vaughan (captain, age 32, Yorkshire) 77 matches scoring 1773 runs @27.70
Ed Joyce (28, Middlesex) 12 matches scoring 319 runs @ 26.58
Ian Bell (24, Warwickshire) 36 matches scoring 1172 runs @37.80
Kevin Pietersen (26, Hampshire) 42 matches scoring 1582 runs @56.50
Andrew Strauss (29, Middlesex) 74 matches scoring 2156 runs @32.66
Paul Collingwood (30, Durham) 112 matches scoring 2690 runs @34.05
Andrew Flintoff (29, Lancashire) 115 matches scoring 2984 runs @33.52
Ravi Bopara (21, Essex) 1 match scoring 7 runs @ -
Paul Nixon (36, Leicestershire) 10 matches scoring 104 runs @11.55
Jamie Dalrymple (26, Middlesex) 24 matches scoring 481 runs @21.86
Liam Plunkett (21, Durham) 22 matches scoring 258 runs @23.45
James Anderson (24, Lancashire) 57 matches scoring 89 runs @7.41
Sajid Mahmood (25, Lancashire) 19 matches scoring 83 runs @9.22
Jon Lewis (31, Gloucestershire) 12 matches scoring 33 runs @6.60
Monty Panesar (24, Northants) 9 matches scoring 6 runs @6.00

Average Age: 25.13
Total ODI Appearances: 622
Total Runs Scored: 13,737

These stats are meaningless and only included because I am at work with very little to do. However, some of them make interesting reading especially Plunkett's. Now Discuss.

Hi Phil,

2 things. First, bearing in mind Strauss's pretty miserable form down under, can you advise what his stats are like in the Windies? Is it happy hunting ground for him?

Second, might it not be more constructive to give the bowlers some bowling stats rather than batting ones, or do you follow Flether's view that we should pick bowlers on their ability to bat?!!!

Can't stand Lewis and would far rather have seen Broad included. Hopefully he won't actually play.

Sad for Loye. A very big score was looming large by the end of that last series.

No cover for a 36yr old keeper??! Brave.

We are quibbling around the fringes, however. We've pretty much got the best players in the squad. They just have to turn up!

Strauss has played 5 Matches in the West Indies in which he scored 172 @ 43.00 so he may well like the conditions over there. Certainly he is a decent cutter and puller of the ball which suggests that the mad pitches they produce will have something for him.

As to the bowlers only having batting averages, I am not with Fletcher. To be honest I haven't even started looking at their bowling figures yet but was planning an in depth look. Also, in ODI's I always feel that the results (generally) are based upon how well either side bats. A bit like it does in the type of Cricket we play on a Sunday. Quite often the side batting 2nd will win with only the loss of 3 or 4 wickets...but Richard, I will include an indepth look at their bowling soon.

It was sad for Loye because I think he was just getting settled. But the ICC have agreed that if Virgil is unfit England can call from outside the 15 to replace him. I suspect that this will be the case and Mal Loye will get his chance.

No cover for Nixon is a big concern, but rumour has it that Bell has kept before and he certainly has a good pair of hands.

You are right; turning up should at least ensure that we make it through to the super 8s round!
