England v West Indies, Headingley - Day 1

Good, yes that's good. Very good. Virgil was outstanding. Just fantastic. Aggers said of one of his cover drives that there is no one in the world who plays a better stroke and he is right. Vaughan is stylish and makes it look easy. Hats off to Virgil...the king is back.

KP's at it again. This guy is surely going to be the best Test batsman of all time isn't he?

Ok. 366 for 5. Start of Day 2. Good position but the weather is about to get involved. So, what's the plan? England will not want a draw. It looks like a decent day up there today but heavy rain for Sunday. Let's assume that they get 90 overs in today and England are either out just after lunch or declare. I think that 450 will be enough. That should still leave 50-60 overs to have a go at WI. Now Sarwan looks like he is out and we already know about Chiv. This leaves their batting looking very exposed. Only Chris Gayle stands as a potentially outstanding bat. We should knock them over easily. But with so much time about to be lost to rain we need to be clinical: get them out for around 250, bat again and declare at 150 which will set a target of 350. This target will inspire WI to play shots and if the weather holds Monday afternoon and Tuesday we should have a win in the bag!

So this morning KP and Matt the Gloves have got to come out blazing. I already think they have enough on the board to win this. The sooner they are bowling the better.

Phil is busy brick laying so just in case any of you are wondering, the Test has now finished.

England set WI 590 odd and won comfortably.

Peitersen hit a professional and steady first double century. He has now got the monkey off his back and he will now step up to a new level.

Sidebottom justified every ounce of his selection by taking 8 wickets in the match as England bowled out WI twice in a total of 79 overs, leaving them adrift by some 250 runs.

Sadly for everyone, Sarwan failed to recover from a shoulder injury gained in the field on Day 1 and he did not bat in either innings. I really think a substitute should be permitted in such obviously honest circumstances.

Harmison and Plunkett were efficient only in patches leaving many to believe that the result was rather flattering. Indeed it was but the media made hay, obviously!

I suspect the WI's need a little more warmth than Leeds in May! I know cricket is a professional game now but I do kind of sympathize!!

With Flintoff back on the surgeon's table, the batting line up will continue un affected (Rightly so. Flintoff is not a batsman and has no right challenging any of them). Prior continues to make Fletcher (Jones and Reid) look silly.

The real test comes in selecting bowlers. Only Panesar and Hoggard can reliably pack their kit for each test. There are lots of names in the pot but none really jumping out.

Next Test starts 7 June, I think.

Have fun.

Irrespective of their ODI form, the English test team seem to be doing extremely well over a fairly long period of time....the Ashes down under notwithstanding, of course.

Btw, Phil, we are a bunch of cricket crazy enthusiasts who are running this website called www.holdingwilley.com. Basically a site featuring varied perspectives and opinions from followers of the game from around the world.

Would you be interested in writing for the site from time to time? It is good fun if you love the game. If you are interested, email me at sreeram@cartwheelcreative.co.in.

In my personal opinion English Cricket are facing a very difficult time here. Parents are not interested in sending their children to cricket and the Children seems to be attracted by EPL. I also wrote a blo article on the DOWN FALL OF ENGLISH CRICKET AND ITS CONSEQUENCES,
